1863 - 1951 Margaret Clay Ferguson was born in Orleans, New York. She received her PhD from Cornell University. She was head of the Department of Botany at Wellesley University. Her research focused on plant genetics, especially in petunia. She was elected the first woman president of the Botanical Society of America.
