Description:

De-mystifying the manuscript submission process

Botany360: De-mystefying the MS Process

Navigating the peer review process can be tricky. Standards for submission, review, and response to reviewers aren’t always formally taught and can be difficult to understand. Those navigating the review process for the first time often must rely on a network of mentors to maneuver a manuscript through submission to acceptance. In this two-part workshop, we provide an introduction to all stages of the peer review process.

This two-part Botany360 event is adapted from the publishing workshop held in conjunction with Botany 2021 Virtual! It’s updated with a new speaker and interactive breakout activities in each part.

Part 1: What should happen before you submit your paper to a journal?

Topics include:

  • Data management and reference managers
  • Choosing a journal
  • Consulting Author Guidelines (hands-on activity)
  • Writing a cover letter
  • Suggesting reviewers

Part 2: What happens after you submit your paper to a journal?

Topics include:

  • What the Editor is looking for
  • What the process is and what the different decisions mean
  • Responding to reviewer comments (hands-on activity)
  • Making sure your published paper is discovered

Workshop attendees will be able to get information from and ask questions of early-career and established authors as well as Editors of BSA publications.
