Thurs 5/26/2005 12:56 AM - Dr. C. Hemingway: Hello, Sweedish Hottdoggs. I am impressed with your experimental design to compare corn seeds in three different light conditions. Good work! Your seeds all started with the same water conditions, but now the seeds kept in the cabinet are rotting. Do you have any ideas why? I am interested in finding out what will happen next with your experiment.
Thu 5/26/2005 2:22 PM - PEER COMMENT from Bush Team 4 (Thomas): Hi this isThomas. I was wondering how much are u watering each one or do you let them soak in water for a while like (Randy) or are your other team mates doing it differently. what is your purpose for your experiment and what is your guys team question.
Wed 6/1/2005 7:27 AM - Dr. Gordon Uno: You had three treatments (Lamp, Wind Sill and Cabinet). Am I correct in concluding that the Lamp seeds have the most light while the Cabinet seeds have the least light?
Andrew’s seeds have ‘grown a lot’ by the 24th – is this growth of a sprout, or is it the seeds themselves expanding?
Thurs 6/2/05 11:12 AM - T2 (Randy): Lamp Seed Analysis: I put a tablespoon of corn in my growth chamber. When the seeds went in they were an oval, square shape with one end pointed. It was yellow on the wide side. I poured about two inches of water and let them soak for 24 hours. After that I poured the water out and then rinsed them. They were more moist, had swelled so that the pointy end isn’t pointy anymore. They look dryer than yesterday (probably because they have been in so much light). The pointy ends are white and are falling off. The seeds are the same except the tips are now a very dark red. After not rinsing them for 2 days they are dried out and smell a little bit. But still they are sprouting. When they sprout the shell cracks in half and the sprout comes out. Today Jake started calling my seeds dead, and from there on referred to them as dead. Then I thought they were dead because they didn’t change. Finally over the 3 day weekend they died, I could tell from the mold that was growing on them. In conclusion I learned that plants can’t live without water for over 3 days and that corn seeds grow slow.
< Wed 6/7/2005 4:35 PM - Dr. Gordon Uno: It looks to me that you learned a lot about seed germination and conducting experiments, even though many of your seeds died. You observed how seeds swell as they absorb water and split as the root forces out of the casing. And you chose an excellent experimental design. Experiments do not always work the first time. Scientists don't like to give up on a good reseach question--we look closely at our research plan, make any adjustments necessary, and try again. I wish you luck on your future experiments.
