BOTANICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA

The Education Committee of the Botanical Society of America is actively pursuing several goals at this time:

World Wide Web Educational Resources

The Botanical Society's web page is relatively new but already has some excellent resources for students and teachers. Cut out the bookmark and keep it near your computer and the computers in your classroom or computer lab. Make copies for each of your students. In addition to the links listed on the bookmark there are other links telling you about the Society. Please join us!

Workshops for Teachers

Members of the Botanical Society plan to attend national and regional meetings of science teachers where they will be presenting workshops. The workshops will give teachers hands-on experience with plant activities they can incorporate in their curricula. Watch for these workshops in your conference program.

We also are sharing with our members the details of teacher workshops that have been offered successfully on college and university campuses. We hope this will encourage botanists to present summer workshops for teachers on their own campuses.

Digitization of the BSA's Slide Collection

The Botanical Society owns over 700 photographic slides with images from all areas of plant biology. The slides can be ordered by contacting Kim Hiser at our business office (Phone: 614-292-3519) and asking for a catalog. However, the Education Committee has appointed a sub-committee that is exploring the possibility of digitizing the slides so they can be distributed from the Society's web page and/or on a CD-ROM.

Hands-on Plant Science Activities

We are exploring a cooperative arrangement with the National Association of Biology Teachers to jointly publish a collection of hands-on activities with plants.
