Candidates for Section Chair 2008 - 2010
Diane Byers –
Diane Byers is an evolutionary ecologist with interests in adaptation
of plants to heterogeneous and changing environments, and the
dynamics of plant breeding/mating systems in fragmented landscapes
(prairies). She received her MS in Botany with Dr. James A. Quinn
in 1988 (Life history variation of Alliaria petiolata
in a range of habitats in New Jersey) and PhD in plant biology
with Dr. Thomas R. Meagher in 1993 (Determination of genetic and
ecological characteristics that result in rarity by comparison
of rare and common species of Eupatorium), both at Rutgers
University. She trained in evolutionary quantitative genetics
as a post-doctoral associate with Dr. Ruth G. Shaw at University
of Minnesota from 1993-1998. This was followed by her current
position at Illinois State University, where she is now an associate
professor. As ecological section chair, she will to work to increase
participation of ecologists in BSA meetings through cross-disciplinary
sessions and symposiums, as well as directly contacting and encouraging
attendance by plant ecologists located near meeting sites.
Mary Carrington
- Mary Carrington is an Associate Professor in the Biology (undergraduate)
and Environmental Biology (graduate) programs at Governors State
University (since 2000). Her interests are community ecology,
restoration ecology and fire ecology, and she is currently conducting
research on linking functional traits of tallgrass prairie plant
species to community assembly outcomes during prairie restoration.
Before coming to Illinois, she conducted doctoral research (comparing
post-fire recruitment at the community level between Florida sand
pine scrub and California chaparral) and postdoctoral research
(on effects of burning season and frequency on flowering and fruiting
of saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) in Florida and California.
