Dear BSA Members
Good morning!
An invitation from the American Soceity of Plant Biologists:
Dear Colleague:
We are writing to bring to your attention an innovative 2-day
workshop that ASPB will be holding in advance of the Plant Biology
and Botany '07 Joint Congress in Chicago this summer – ASPB's
first ever Laboratory Leadership Workshop. This workshop is intended
to provide the next generation of plant biologists – specifically
on-the-academic-job-market postdocs and pre-tenure faculty –
with comprehensive, practical information about how to manage
and lead a lab.
The complete workshop schedule is available online (http://www.aspb.org/meetings/pb-2007/labmanagement.cfm),
but featured sessions include "Job-search Strategies",
which will focus on applying to, interviewing at, and negotiating
faculty positions at institutions large and small; "Grants
and Budget Management", in which attendees will hear from
experts on both sides of the funding equation; "Sex and Science,"
in which HHMI investigator Jo Handelsman will discuss identifying,
understanding, and dealing with gender bias; and "Ethics
in Science", in which Plant Physiology editor-in-chief Don
Ort will outline the vital role we all play as stewards of the
plant biology discipline.
Please note that registration for the Laboratory Leadership Workshop
(https://www.aspb.org/securewebforms/pb2007/labmanagement.cfm),
which is open to anyone whether or not they are a member of ASPB,
is separate from that for the ASPB annual meeting; there is no
obligation to register for both events. However, both events will
be held in the Chicago Hilton, and we hope that many workshop
registrants will also choose to participate in the Plant Biology
and Botany '07 Joint Congress.
If you are a senior postdoc or a pre-tenure faculty member looking
for practical information, support, and perspective on the challenges
of running an academic research lab, please consider registering
for this workshop. If you know of any such individuals, please
tell them about this opportunity. A limited number of postdoc
travel awards are expected to be offered; additional information
is available through the registration form.
We look forward to seeing you in Chicago; in the meantime, if
you have any questions about this workshop, please do not hesitate
to get in touch - ctaylor@aspb.org.
