Registration for this year's conference is now open. To register, go to http://www.2005.botanyconference.org/ and follow the links.

Make sure you consider all your options. Take part in the Educational Forum on Saturday, the Workshops on Sunday and Field Trips and Local Tours throughout the week. Please note: All 2005 Workshops are free of charge!

2. UMEB Application Deadline Has Been Extended
The deadline for applications in the BSA “Increasing diversity at the annual Botanical Society of America meeting” program has been extended to June 1, 2005. Please note: This is part of a wider program called "Undergraduate Mentoring in Environmental Biology" (UMEB) and is a fantastic opportunity for members to support for minority involvement in plant biology. This program is specific to the BSA. PLease take the time to get involved. For more information go to: http://www.2005.botanyconference.org/StudentSupport/UMEB.php.

3. AJB - Going for Color (where appropriate)
Over recent years American Journal of Botany editors, Karl Niklas and now Judy Jernstedt, have been strong advocates for increasing the use of color images in the AJB and for lowering the cost of doing so. I'm pleased to report we have taken notice and are enacting the following change of policy:

As of January 1, 2005, the cost for publishing color images/figures is $365 per plate (for the first and each subsequent plate). We may, at our discretion, provide rebates for subsequent plates related their positioning within the journal and/or any other image-related costs for publishing.

4. Archive Review & Centennial History
BSA member Betty Smocovitis visited the St. Louis office to review the archives as she prepares a special publication for the BSA Centennial history. We look forward to hosting her for a longer research and writing visit this summer.

5. Education, Outreach and You - BSA Sci-π
We are live! BSA Sci-π can be viewed at: http://www.botany.org/scientific_inquiry/

Last month we featured recent developments on an interactive, web-based educational tool to support scientific inquiry and mentoring using plants and plant-based research. Several schools are now participating. We invite you to stop by the website and see how the program is starting to evolve.

This program will be an outstanding opportunity to mentor young people and meet some of the outreach and service requirements of your grants and departments. Feel free to contact us if you would like more information on how to become involved and/or use this resource as a tool to support your work. Please note: There will be several sessions on this exciting new project presented at Botany 2005 in Austin.

6. Announcements
Remember to send announcements, notices and job postings in to bsa-manager@botany.org for the BSA website.

7. BSA Grant Opportunities Newsletter
The first edition of the BSA Grant Opportunities Newsletter is now available online as a (fairly large) PDF file. It can be found at: http://www.botany.org/newsletters/GrantNews-May-June05.pdf. Over the coming months we hope you will view the additional issues as one of the significant benefits the BSA offers to its members. The first issue is freely available on the BSA website, with subsequent issues being posted as a secure item accessible via your member login.

Thank you for your time!

Sincerely,

Bill Dahl
