We hope you're all having a great summer. We are looking
forward to seeing most of you in Austin. It's been a busy month at the
BSA worldwide headquarters here in St. Louis. The BSA Sci-π pilot has
been completed (we'll report on this in Austin), Botany 2005 is coming
together nicely, we've worked with award committees and sections and given
out many awards (including student awards in support of the conference)
and, to top it all off, we had one of the most exciting elections ever.
Participation was well up on previous years.
1.
2005 BSA Merit Award
We are pleased to announce Dr. Scott Russell
is the most recent recipient of the Botanical Society of America's highest
honor. He will receive the 2005 BSA Merit Award at the BSA Banquet in
Austin on Wednesday, August 17.
2.
BSA Election
We are pleased to announce the results of the 2005 BSA
election. Congratulations to Dr. Chris Haufler, BSA President
Elect, and Dr. Karen Renzaglia, Program Director (2006-2008).
Thanks to all of you who took the time to vote - the turnout was fantastic.

Student Governance and the BSA
The Botanical Society of America is a membership organization.
The officers and staff of the BSA would like to meet with students at
the Austin meeting to discuss "student participation" in the
activities of the Society. Discussion topics will include 1) student representation
to the Executive Committee (the governing board of the Society); 2) student
service on BSA committees; 3) the formation of a student-run council that
would contribute to the ongoing activities of the Society; 4) recruitment
of new student members; 5) activities and services that would increase
student participation in the BSA and the annual meeting. We welcome discussion
of additional topics.
The meeting will be hosted by BSA President,
Dr. Allison Snow, and BSA President Elect, Dr. Edward Schneider. It will
take place on Tuesday, August 16th, 2005 at 3:45 pm, Room 408 at the Hilton.
Please mark this time in schedule. For up-to-date information see: http://www.2005.botanyconference.org/engine/search/index.php?func=detail&aid=502.

Society could use your experience and participation as we move forward
into new areas with educational outreach and support. You can view this
year's topics and abstracts at:

As long as you are planning to be in town on the Saturday
for the Educational Forum, we encourage you to take a look at what is
happening on Sunday in the Botany 2005 Workshops, or out on the Field
Trips. As with the Educational Forum, we'd appreciate your support at
these events as well. You can view the current offering at:
