CALL FOR PROPOSALS: GENETICS GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD
PURPOSE AND ELIGIBILITY
The Genetics Section of the Botanical Society of America (BSA) is pleased
to announce an award to promote graduate student interest and research
in plant genetics. To be eligible, candidates must be a member of the
BSA and affiliated with the Genetics Section, be a registered full-time
graduate student, and have a faculty advisor who is also a member of the
BSA. It is the intension off the Genetics Section that one award will
be made to a Ph.D. candidate and one award will be made to an M.S. student.
PROPOSAL GUIDELINES
The proposal may be on any area of plant genetics (e.g., evolutionary,
population, agricultural, molecular, developmental, etc.) and must contain
a:
1) Title page (title of proposal, name of student, student's institutional
and departmental affiliation, and year of student's study);
2) Abstract;
3) Narrative (description of the research, including conceptual background,
purpose or objective, outline of methodology, and potential significance
within plant genetics);
4) Budget explaining how the funds are to be used;
5) Bibliography; and
6) Biographical Sketch; and
7) Transcripts from current institution (do not need to be official copies)
The Abstract, Narrative, Budget and associated tables and figures should
not exceed five single-spaced pages, and the Bibliography and Biographic
Sketch are limited to two pages each. Proposals should include one-inch
margins all around and use a font size of not smaller than 12 point. In
addition, proposals must be accompanied by a letter of support from the
student's advisor.
AWARD LEVEL AND ANNOUNCEMENT
The award is for $500 with an additional $500 to support travel to present
the results of the work at an annual BSA, Genetics Section meeting upon
completion of the project. Award winners for this round of competition
will be announced at the BSA Banquet held at the Hilton in Austin, TX.
SUBMISSION
Students may submit three (3) hardcopies of the complete proposal, or
send the proposal as a .pdf e-mail attachment. The proposal and the letter
of support must be postmarked no later than May 31, 2005 to the Chair
of the Genetics Graduate Student Research Award Committee at the following
