Members of BSA Ecological Section,

As chair of the Ecological Section, I have several items to share with you as we prepare for the upcoming Botany 2005 in Austin, Texas.

1. I encourage you to attend Botany 2005 as the Ecological Section has 36 talks and 24 posters scheduled. In addition, we are co-sponsoring three interesting symposia including "Biology of Dryland Plants", "Connecting People to Plants--Botanical Messages that Make a Difference", and "The Cross Timbers: Botany, History, and Current Issues". Our business meeting for the Ecological Section is scheduled for Tuesday, August 16 at 5:00pm. Your participation in all of these sessions will enrich them greatly.

2. We need to elect a new secretary as the term for Joseph Colosi (our current secretary) expires at the end of the Botany 2005 meeting. Duties of the secretary are to "keep records of the Section, carry on all necessary correspondence with the members, serve as fiscal officer and serve as Program Chair of the Section". The term is for three years. Please send me names of anyone interested in serving as secretary of the Ecological Section by August 10, 2005. Self-nominations also are encouraged. If you have questions, contact Joseph Colosi (JCC0@desales.edu) or me (cfjmc1@eiu.edu). A ballot will be circulated to elect the new secretary.

3. We are coordinating judges for our student posters and talks for the awards granted by the Ecological Section. Student posters are scheduled for Tuesday, August 16 from 12:30-2:00pm, and the talks are scheduled for Tuesday, August 16 from 2:00-5:00pm. If you are interested in serving as a judge, please contact me at cfjmc1@eiu.edu or call me at 217-581-6243. This service is extremely valuable to the Ecological Section and to our students who are the future of botany.

I look forward to seeing many of you in Austin!

Janice Coons, Chair
