Education, Outreach and You
I'd also like to bring the membership’s attention to the gathering momentum
behind the BSA education and outreach opportunities.
BSA Sci-π
A team of BSA members and leading educators from around the country recently
met at the BSA Office in St. Louis. The group discussed the development
of an interactive, web-based program to support scientific inquiry and
mentoring using plants and plant-based research. A test program will be
run at four High Schools and one Middle School this spring. This ‘pilot’
will use a proven student project that will be adapted in collaboration
with the participating teachers.
As the program develops, BSA members will have the opportunity to participate
as ‘professional experts’ and in developing future research questions
used in the schools. One significant benefit this may provide you as a
member is fulfilling outreach expectations of your home institution and
outside granting agencies. We'll provide more detail in the coming months
as the project moves into the implementation phase.
An overview of the program was presented at the Botany 2004 conference
in Utah. View the Botany 2004 BSA Sci-π abstract at: http://www.2004.botanyconference.org/engine/search/index.php?func=detail&aid=1053
and see the list of participants at the recent planning meeting at: http://www.botany.org/scientific_inquiry/committee.php.
Other BSA Educational Developments via the Web
Beverly Brown, Teaching Section Chair, and Gordon Uno, Education Committee
Chair, are working with the BSA Office to develop mechanisms and criteria
for members wishing to provide educational images and/or resources for
the BSA web site. Members of the teaching section are currently in the
process of reviewing the BSA image collection beginning at: http://www.botany.org/plantimages/.
If you would like to participate in the review process and/or have images
or other resource materials you feel would be beneficial as an educational
tool to the BSA and its outreach efforts, please contact the BSA Office
at: bsa-manager@botany.org.
